The game kicks off when the normally-vibrant Picnic Province suddenly loses all of its color and our canine protagonist gains possession of The Brush: a magical paintbrush that allows them to apply color to the now-black and white world. It all fits well into the game's generally inclusive and therapeutic nature, and even the options themselves are written rather charmingly.Ĭhicory is essentially a top-down non-scrolling adventure game that most closely follows the stylings of something like The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (to the point that apparently even the residents of the world use "screens" as a standard unit of distance measurement). You can turn off the squishy wet paint sounds if you like, you can freely alter the way the health system works in boss fights (the game does indeed have some combat, though comparatively sparse) for people who are struggling with it or just want to experience the story or even turn the fights off altogether, and there's even an option to enable content warning pop-ups for when the game's story dips into some of its heavier themes. Aside from the usual things like control and sound options the designers went the extra mile here in thoughtfulness and making sure that the game can appeal to anyone, even if they have particular sensitivities. I want to start by giving a small shout-out to the game's options menu, which feels weird in a way but it also does a really nice job of setting the tone for the whole experience. I'm going to try to tag and contain spoiler-related stuff as much as I can here so that reading the OP doesn't give away too much. It's also one of those games that's probably better to go in the less you know about it beforehand, so if the basic premise sounds at all intriguing, I'd suggest checking it out for yourself before diving too deeply into other people's takes. Clever and touching, though not without potential flaws. The TL DR version of all of this is that I highly recommend the game particularly to creative types, whether as a profession or simply a hobby. Now here we are, where I'm making a thread mostly as a personal excuse to gush over the game's quality while also trying to sort through and put a pin in my own thoughts about it. So I picked it up on Switch and played through the game about two weekends ago. I was surprised, then, when over the past month-ish I started to see it pop up on several folks' and news outlets' GOTY lists and decided that if it's really getting that level of aplomb then maybe I really should circle back around to it. So Chicory: A Colorful Tale is a game that originally came out in mid-2021 I remember seeing some early preview-related stuff about it prior to then and put the game on my "oh yeah, I should get around to checking that out" list which usually tends to spell doom for my odds of actually picking a game up.
